3D Enlargement: Basketball Figurines

The Story:
The University of South Florida has established the Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies (AIST), a facility within the school's College of Arts and Sciences, with a goal of creating an interdisciplinary approach to research using cutting edge technology. AIST has a specific interest in preserving and protecting the world's cultural and natural heritage through education and global engagement.

Archaeologists have been investigating the Takalik Abaj site for over a century; however the Takalik Abaj Monumental Sculpture Project is the first to create a fully documented and comprehensive study of the work. The Project will facilitate independent and collaborative research of the pre-Columbian site. Using the most accurate and complete documentation methods, AIST and its collaborators plan to produce the best possible historical documentation that can be shared among the international research community.                                                                                                                                                                                                                         return to full slide show
The Challenge:
Witenstein brought two toy figurines, along with a number of separate accessories, to Direct Dimensions to have them scanned at high resolution for enlargements that could be milled from foam for sculptural display.
                                                                                                                                                              return to full slide show

The Solution:
  • Scan figurines and accessories separately at high resolution
  • Help artist have enlargements milled from foam
  • Several Accessories created using Rapid Prototyping
  • The Artist used the final manufactured pieces to create his sculptures
                                                                                                                                                              return to full slide show
