Henri Matisse is best known as a great master painter of the 20th Century event though the French artist was also an acclaimed draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. The insights he gained in one medium led to innovations in another. Matisse himself described sculpture as a rest from painting, "I myself have done sculpture as the complement of my studies.
