Fundraising: BMORE Sculpture

The Story:
The University of South Florida has established the Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies (AIST), a facility within the school's College of Arts and Sciences, with a goal of creating an interdisciplinary approach to research using cutting edge technology. AIST has a specific interest in preserving and protecting the world's cultural and natural heritage through education and global engagement.

The Takalik Abaj Monumental Stone Sculpture Project is a collaboration of AIST with the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican studies, Inc (FAMSI) using advanced technologies for high definition digital documentation and analysis.

Archaeologists have been investigating the Takalik Abaj site for over a century; however the Takalik Abaj Monumental Sculpture Project is the first to create a fully documented and comprehensive study of the work. The Project will facilitate independent and collaborative research of the pre-Columbian site. Using the most accurate and complete documentation methods, AIST and its collaborators plan to produce the best possible historical documentation that can be shared among the international research community.                                                                                                                                                                                                                         return to full slide show

The Challenge:  
The University of South Florida invited Direct Dimensions to travel to Guatemala and join them on a finca where the Takalik Abaj site is located. While there Direct Dimensions would have to capture 32 of the ancient monuments at a high resolution without touching and disturbing their integrity.

The Solution:

• Travel to Guatemala bringing all necessary scanners and supplies
  
• Capture the monuments, located on and around the site, in high resolution using scanning techniques and photogrametry over the course of a week
• Process and compile 3D data
  

• Create final 3D models      
  
• Data and final 3D models are delivered to USF who have made much of it available on the MESO3D website
