Digital Restoration: Ancient Egyptian Artifacts

The Story:
Sculptures in ancient Egypt were thought to grant eternal life to the kings, queens, and gods that they portrayed. The mystique of these eternal sculptures is just one of the reasons that we continue to be fascinated by the ancient Egyptian culture and the remarkable sculptures they left behind, many of which remain in museum collections around the world. Many museums consider their Egyptian collection among their most popular exhibits. The Tutankhamen and the Golden Age of Pharaohs, for example, is regarded as the most popular traveling exhibit in history.
The University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is home to one of the most extensive collections of Ancient Egyptian and Nubian artifacts in the United States including over 42,000 items. The collection, which spans the entirety of Egypt's Ancient History, is rare and unusual because it has been assembled over a century of archaeological investigations sponsored, funded and/or organized by the University Museum.                                                                                                                        return to full slide show
The Challenge:
Direct Dimensions was brought in to 3D laser scan and model Ancient Egyptian Sculptures from the Museum Collection to create exact digital copies that could be used to make rapid prototypes. The rapid prototypes would serve as multiple high quality reproductions for the Museum Gift Shop.                                                                                                                                                                                                                    return to full slide show

The Solution:
  • 3D scan the Ancient Egyptian Artifacts on-site at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology
  • Compile and process the data to create exact, 3D digital replicas of the Ancient Egyptian Artifacts
  • Scale the watertight models to the desired heights for replication
  • Rapid prototype the final models to create a high quality pattern for casting
  • The museum arranged for a production fabricator to cast the reproductions in a high quality resin material                                                                                                                                                     return to full slide show
