Face Scanning Portraiture: Ray Lewis Bust

The Story:
If you know anything about the Baltimore Ravens, you know about Ray Lewis, the Ravens very first draft pick as a Baltimore team. Lewis is the intimidating linebacker who has appeared in eight Pro Bowls and continuously leads, energizes and inspires the Baltimore team and its loving fans. Since early in his career, Lewis also strengthens and inspires the Baltimore Community off the field with his many charities focusing on community involvement, family strengthening and charitable giving.

The Final Milled Marble Bust of Ray Lewis
The Ray Lewis Foundation strives "to be the catalyst for positive development in our Nation's youth and young adults through a sustainable methodology that instills core values in academics, athletics, financial literacy, environmental issues, and personal life skills".

Direct Dimensions had the privilege of scanning the legendary football star to create a life-size marble bust that was later auctioned for $7,000 at the 2nd Annual Ray Lewis Foundation Cocktail Party and Auction. The one-of-a-kind bust brought in the highest bid made amongst an array of autographed sports memorabilia. Direct Dimensions worked closely with the US Army's Advanced Design and Manufacturing Team, American Resin Castings and John Lanzalotti, MD to create the bust for a great local cause.                                                                                                                                                                                                        return to full slide show
The Challenge:
The Ray Lewis Foundation approached Direct Dimensions with the task of creating a life-size marble bust of Ray Lewis to auction off at the 2nd annual Ray Lewis Foundation Cocktail Party and Auction.
                                                                                                                                                                                  return to full slide show

The Solution:
  • 3D laser scan the sculpture on-site at Ray Lewis' Home
  • Create a 3D digital model using the raw scan data
  • Send the watertight 3D model to the US Army APG ADM team for rapid prototyping
  • Send the data to American Resin Castings for Milling
  • Final Sculptural Details added by John Lanzalotti M.D.
  • Mount to a traditional base                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    return to full slide show
