Digital Molds : Vegetable Sculptures

The Story:
Jan Kirsh, sculptor and owner of Jan Kirsh Landscapes, LTD, and Jan Kirsh Studio, engaged Direct Dimensions for an important 3D project close to her heart. Although she has been a highly acclaimed landscape designer for over 25 years, Ms. Kirsh's background is in photography, design and the fine arts. Combing her love of nature with her artistic training she returned to her 'roots', and began hand sculpting stylized fruits and vegetables. Her sculptures caught the attention of the organizers of the Architectural Digest Home Design Show who offered her a place in the March 2009 show.

Jan's vision for her sensual sculptures was that they could be created in multiple sizes and various media, and installed either indoors or outdoors. She worked each piece thoroughly by hand, in clay and then a plaster cast, to achieve the desired level of perfection.                                                                                                                                                                                           return to full slide show
The Challenge:
Jan was new to sculpture as a business and had less than one year to prepare for her show, she needed help turning her vision into reality.  She wanted to have provide an array of examples for the show that highlighted 20 unique sculpturesin multiple scales and materials.                                                                    return to full slide show

The Solution:
  • 3D laser scan each plaster sculpture at high resolution to capture surface details.
  • Compile and process the data to create accurate 3D digital models
  • Create a wish list of materials and scales by sculpture.
  • Scale the models to the sizes specified by the artist.
  • Direct Dimensions provided pricing and sources for various options
  • Jan made informed decisions about her overall production plan to minimize cost and maximize value.
  • Create high-quality photo renderings of the pieces residing in possible future landscapes and interiors.                                                                                                                                                         return to full slide show
