Digital Reproduction: Fallen Soldier 2 x scale Edition

The Story:
According to the US Army Field Manual Soldiers Guide, "Memorial ceremonies are patriotic tributes to deceased soldiers". The tradition of arranging military gear as a symbol of a fallen military service man has been around at least since the American Civil War when it was used in place of a burial cross on the battlefield. The earliest recorded images of the battle cross date back to World War I.

Today the battle cross remains as a traditional part of a deeply moving and emotional ceremony where surviving soldiers of a troop will morn the loss of their fallen comrades.   Richard Rist, Artist and Navy Veteran, wanted to create a monumental statue that would cause the viewer to stop and think about the real cost of war and each individual sacrifice that is made in service to our country.

The Challenge:
Make lifelike bronze monument of the Fallen Soldier Memorial at double life size heroic scale.                                                                                                                                                                                    return to full slide show

The Solution:
  • Laser scan the individual boots, gun, and helmet
  • Make high resolution digital models
  • Make double scale rapid prototypes of each part
  • Rubber molds were made of Rapid Prototypes
  • Wax castings were used in lost wax bronze casting                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      return to full slide show
