Enlargement: "Dignity" - Zachary Oxman

The Story:
Artist Zachary Oxman of Bethesda, Maryland was commissioned by Anthony Manganaro, Chairman and Owner of Siena Farm in Paris, Kentucky, to create a large bronze equestrian statue. The 30ft long and 20ft high sculpture, fabricated from bronze and stainless steel, was installed at Siena Farm in August 2009 and currently resides in front of the farm's main office.

The Challenge:
Oxman approached Direct Dimensions with a plan to make a 3X Enlargement of a hand-sculpted clay horse.  The finished piece would be bronze sheet,
formed and hand-welded to a steel skeleton of the horse. The skeleton would be made of interlocking enlarged cross sections taken from a digital model of the clay original.                                                                                                                                                        return to full slide show

The Solution:
  • Laser scan the original maquette at Direct Dimensions studio
  • Make a high resolution digital model
  • Work directly with the artist to sculpt the digital model to his specifications
  • Remove yoke leaving only the horse
  • Separate the head, mane, and tail detail areas
  • Mill the major detail areas in 10lb foam using 5-axis CNC mill
  • Foam pieces cast in bronze
  • Zach used 3D model to create CAD cross sections
  • Mill 2D cross-sections from thin sheet steel
  • Cross Sections cut by water jet to create skeleton
  • Zach fabricated the sculpture in his studio in Bethesda, MD
