Digital Restoration: The Awakening

The Story:
J. Seward Johnson's The Awakening adorned DC's Hains Point for 27 years before it was sold to the developers for National Harbor in Prince George's County. The 70 foot statue, which depicts a giant struggling to emerge from beneath the earth's surface, was on loan to the National Park Service from the time of its installation in 1980 for the International Sculpture Conference Exhibition.
Consisting of five large, individual aluminum pieces buried in the ground, the sculpture gives the impression of a giant in distress as he tries to free himself from the clutches of the earth. At the sculpture's highest point the right arm and hand reach 17 feet into the air. It now rests, in its intended orientation, on the Eastern Bank of the Potomac River at National Harbor.                                                                                              return to full slide show
The Challenge:
Digital Atelier called upon Direct Dimensions to find an affordable and accurate solution to document  The Awakening in its exact current state and provide them with a 3D plot showing the intersections of the mating surface of the sculpture with the ground, which could be used to prepare the new site to receive the sculpture in its original configuration.                                                                                                               return to full slide show

The Solution:
  • 3D scan the sculpture and its location using a medium-range spherical scanner
  • 3D scan each of the five individual aluminum pieces of the sculpture on-site in Hains Point with multiple types of scanners
  • Assemble the scan data to create a single, coordinated 3D model consisting of the five individual pieces, keeping only a small patch of land around each for analysis
  • Analyze the intersections of the sculptural model with the ground
  • Plot these intersections to create a site plan that can be used to prepare the new site for relocation                                                                                                                                                                return to full slide show
